On March 22, 2002 Resolution No. 195 – 2002, Designating Suffolk County as America’s Lighthouse County was approved by the Suffolk County Legislature. National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000
Public Law 106-355
H.R. 4613
On October 24, 2000, a national lighthouse preservation program was established when Congress enacted the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-355; H.R. 4613). This act amended the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-655; 16 USC 470) by authorizing the transfer of historic lighthouses out of ownership of one party into one who will care for the lighthouses, at no cost to federal agencies, state and local governments and local historical societies.

National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Program
In accordance with federal law, the United States Coast Guard has relinquished the rights to the lighthouses and the land surrounding them to the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management. This agency's National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Program identifies parties to accept responsibility for the management and preservation of the lighthouses and the land surrounding them and assesses their qualifications for transfer.

National Maritime Heritage Act of 1994
Public Law 103-451
16 USC Chapter 74

On September 14, 1993 the National Maritime Heritage Act of 1993 (H.R. 3056) was proposed under the 103rd Congress. This introduced the concept of using a percentage of the annual proceeds from scrapped vessels of the National Defense Reserve Fleet to support a competitive grants program for maritime heritage education and preservation activities. On November 2, 1994, the National Maritime Heritage Act of 1994 became Public Law 103-451.

The National Park Service
Maritime Heritage Program

At the request of Congress, the National Park Service (NPS) established the National Maritime Initiative within the NPS History Division in 1987 to help preserve historic maritime resources. When the National Maritime Heritage Act of 1994 (Public Law 103-451) was passed, the National Maritime Initiative took on a new role in helping to coordinate a national maritime heritage policy and administer a grants program supporting maritime heritage preservation and education projects. After Congress enacted the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-355), the Maritime Heritage Program had been requested to to participate in the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Program.

National Historic Preservation Act of 1966
Public Law 89-655
16 USC 470
This act established a program for national historic preservation, addressing issues from the expansion of the National Register of Historic Places to establishment and direction of state preservation programs.
